From the couple: Our wedding was really only a destination wedding for our American and international guests. My husband, Patrick, is Swiss born and raised and a few years after we met in Boston where I grew up we moved to Switzerland together. We live in the capital mini-city of Bern, but we wanted to get married in the mountains, which are one of the best parts about living here. Patrick's family owns a small vacation home in the southeastern state of Graubunden, in the Romantsch-speaking village called Vella. We knew before we were engaged that we would like to get married in this area. The surrounding alpine scenery, the centuries old Baroque style church, the rustic farmhouses and cobblestoned village square provided a stunning setting for the wedding we had in mind. The church ceremony was a traditional Catholic one in a blend of English and Swiss German. We had the reception on the top of a mountain overlooking the village below. The Guesthouse Triel hosted us and our 78 guests on their balcony for the reception. The menu of local specialties was prepared lovingly by the husband and wife team that run the guesthouse. Fortunately, we had prepared ahead for rain with a large enclosed tent because it poured the entire day and night. In the end, it didn't matter at all. We used many regional vendors and products, but overall it was a night of blending cultures and traditions, and grassroots efforts from our friends and family to help with everything from the wedding cake to the music for our ceremony and reception. I have to say, one of the things I loved most about our wedding was that we were able to stay at the reception dancing and celebrating into the wee hours. A wedding is such a time consuming and expensive (but wonderful) event, we were so happy ours lasted so long and our hosts didn't limit us in this way. Since many of our guests had taken a vacation from work in order to be at the wedding, there was a great atmosphere throughout the night and no one was in a rush to get back to their hotel.
