From the couple: With a ton of people from New York, Arizona and everywhere in between coming into town, we really wanted our friends and family to enjoy the weather and experience a whimsical California wedding. When we first visited Calamigos Ranch, we fell in love with the beautiful tree that we ended up getting married under and the unique scenery that surrounded it. We live in the city, and having our wedding out in the woods was an opportunity for us to leave behind our hectic daily routine and hang out with our family and friends in a serene part of LA that we rarely get to visit. We are both artistic types and first met in Animation class at USC. We started dating while working on a project at school where we shared a common workspace, so it seemed appropriate that our first project as husband and wife was to create our wedding as we wanted it. In the months before the big day, our garage and dining room were transformed into craft workshops as we cut, sanded, painted, folded, tied, filled, printed and glued our way to the DIY wedding of our dreams. Among the things we created together were wooden nameplates cut from tree branches in Jon's childhood backyard, intricate cutout paper dahlias, wood photo transfers, stained glass table numbers and multicolored lantern windows. And the crafts didn't stop with us, as Jon's stepfather Paul jumped in and created tree branch candle holders and a beautiful cake stand. Lastly, after countless flea market visits, we collected enough vintage bottles to accommodate Marla Hudnall's amazing flower and succulent arrangements. With all the effort we put into each individual piece, it was really amazing to see it all come together as our own unique vision. One of our favorite moments of the wedding was our first time together - the first look. When we saw each other, we were both so happy and couldn't stop laughing and smiling. It's a personal moment that we will both never forget. Margaret is Catholic & Mexican and Jon is Jewish, so for our ceremony and party we wanted to incorporate elements of both of our individual cultures and heritages. We chose a non-denominational reverend who took elements like the kiddish cup, unity candle, mariachis and breaking of the glass and created a beautiful ceremony that we felt represented us well. As a fun nod to this idea, after the ceremony us and our families walked out to the mariachi band playing Hava Nagila. The evening went by so fast, but we made sure to make time to eat some great food and get in lots of dancing. At the end of the night, we realized how good it felt to see all the people closest to us in our lives finally get an opportunity to meet and have such a great time together as a family. Being from opposite sides of the country, our wedding was really one of our only opportunities to make this happen, and we are so thankful for everybody who came out to celebrate with us. Thanks to our photographer Kaysha, who did an outstanding job capturing the feeling of our day, we will remember these special moments forever.
